Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Aqueous Geochemistry and Kinetics

Dept. of Earth Sciences

University of California, Riverside

Riverside, CA 92521 USA

This is not a soft-money position; it is an annually renewable, open-ended, 9-month research appointment that is funded by the science college as part of a compensation package for my new half-time administrative duties as Associate Dean.  The starting date is on or after October 1, 2009.

Applicants must have a solid research background in aqueous geochemistry and kinetics.  Hands-on familiarity with experimental methods for quantifying rates of fluid-mineral reactions, especially sulfide, silicate, and tungstate mineral dissolution reactions, is essential.  Experience with ICP-MS and other methods of dissolved elemental analysis, along with experience in SEM/BSE/EDS, BET surface area measurements, salinity and pH measurements, UV-Visible spectrophotometry, and powder XRD will also be of advantage.  An ability to interact with and train both graduate and undergraduate students is desired; excellent fluency in English is required.

A candidate’s ability to teach an undergraduate course every year in Resource Geology, Mineralogy, or Petrology may permit 3 months of additional recurring Lecturer employment in the Earth Sciences Department.  Alternatively, opportunities for pursuing funding of 3 additional months of postdoctoral salary from extramural (soft-money) sources will also be available.

Specific information about my geochemical kinetics research program and laboratory can be found at http://mckibben.ucr.edu/Research.html.

Please send a letter/email of interest and detailed resume, and arrange to have three letters/emails of recommendation sent to:
